Borneol (bing pian)

Borneolum

 

Properties: Pungent and bitter in flavour, slightly cold in nature, and it affinits to the hear, spleen and lung channels. Being pungent, volatile and bitter, it is purgative; and as an aromatic, it has stronger stimulating action on the sense organs. This drug functions in resuscitating and restoring consciousness, serving to treat coma of heat-blockage type. But owing to weakness in potency, it is used mostly as an adjuvant and in combination with heat-eliminating herbs and drugs for resuscitation. When used externally, it is rather effective in promoting tissue regeneration and relieving pain. It is common drug for diseases of eye, ear, nose, throat and surgery.

Effects: Inducing resuscitation and restoring consciousness, promoting tissue regeneration and relieving pain.

Indications:

1. For invasion of the pericardium by pathogens of epidemic febrile disease, or stroke of phlegm-heat, unconsciousness and convulsion in the type of heat-blockage, it is often used with drugs for clearing away heat, calming endopathic wind, resuscitating and restoring consciousness, such as Calculus Bovis, Cornu Rhinoceri, Asiatici, Cornu Antelopis, Moschus, etc. , as in Bezoar Bolus for Resurrection (Angong Niuhuang Wan), Treasured Bolus (Zhibao Dan), etc.

2. For conjunctivitis, borneol Fel Ursi, Calamina and Borax are processed into eye drops for use. In treatment of swollen, sore throat and canker sores, it is used with Cinnabaris, Natrii Sulfas Exsiccatus, Borax (ground into powder) for external use on the affected area. In treatement of skin infection, it is used with drugs for eliminating toxins, reducing swelling promoting tissue regeneration and relieving pain, such as Resina Olibani, Resina Draconis, Margarita, etc. , as in Power for Promoting Regeneration of Tissue (Sheng Ji San).

Dosage and Administration: 0.03-0.1g, used in bolus or powder, not in decoction; proper amount for external use.

Precautions: This drug should not be taken in pregnancy.
