Properties:
Sweet in flavour, warm in nature, it is tropistic to the
kidney and spleen channels. Being highly warm in property,
it can reinforce fire and strengehen Yang. It
predominantly acts on the middle and lower-jiao, warming
and tonifying spleen-and kidney-yang as well astringing.
It is thus an important herb for deficiency of both spleen
and kidney-yang and debility of the lower-jiao. It often
serves to treat syndromes of insufficiency of kidney-yang,
impotence, spermatorrhea, deficiency of both spleen-and
kidney-yang, chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain and asthma
of cold-syndrome due to kidney-deficiency.
Effects:
Tonifying the kidney, strengthening Yang, warming the
spleen and arresting diarrhea, helping inspiration of air
and relieving asthma.
Indications:
1. For insufficiency of
kidney-yang, debility of the lower-jiao, lumbago,
impotence, spermatorrhea and frequent micturation, it is
often used with Cortex Eucommiae, Semen Cuscutae, Semen
Juglandis, Rhizoma Dioscoreae, Herba Epimedii to tonify
the kidney, invigorate Yang , keep vital essence and
reduce urnation, as in Psoralea Pill (Buguzhi Wan) and
Pill for Treating Kidney Deficiency (Qing¡¯e Wan), etc. ;
for morning diarrhea due to deficiency-cold of the spleen
and kidney, it is often used with Semen Amomi Cardamomi,
Fructus Euodiae, Fructus Schisandrae to warm and tonify
the spleen and kidney, astringe the intestine to stop
diarrhea, as in Pill of four Miraculous Herbs (Sishen
Wan).
2. For insufficiency of
kidney-qi,
weak inhalation of breath, chronic cough, asthma of
deficiency-type, spontaneous perspiration and shortness of
breath, it is often used with Radix Genseng, Gecko,
Fructus Corni, Fructus Schisandrae, etc. to tonify the
kidney, help in halation and arrest asthma.
