Properties:
It is bitter and acrid in flavour, and cold in nature. It
is tropistic to the lung, large intestine channels. Its
acridness is good at dispersing; bitterness, at purging;
coldness at clearing away heat and sending down rebellious
Qi. Therefore, it can clear away the lung-heat,
phlegm-dampness, relieve cough and asthma. It is indicated
in cough and asthma due to lung-heat and reversed Qi.
Effects:
Removing heat from the lung and dissolving phlegm,
relieving cough and asthma.
Indications:
For treatment of cough due to phlegm-heat, abundant expectoration and
shortness breath, it is usually used in combination with
Cortex Mori Radicis, Radix Scutellariae, Folium
Eriobotryae, Bulbus Fritillariae, and other heat-clearing
away and phlegm-resolving herbs; For treatment of
expectorating sputum with blood caused by hyperactivity of
fire due to Yin deficiency, it can be used in combination
with Colla Corii Asini, Fructus Arctii, Radix
Glycyrrhizae, Semen Armeniacae Amarum, and other herbs in
order to nourish Yin and moisten the lung, relieve cough
and dissolve phlegm, such as Bufei Ejiao Tang.
Besides,
it is indicated in hemorrhoid with swelling and pain.
