Myrrh (mo yao)

Myrrha

 

Properties: It is bitter in flavour and neutral in nature, acts on the heart, liver spleen channels. Being bitter for dispersion and purgation relieving blood and Qi stasis, promoting blood circulation to relieve pain, subsiding swelling and promoting tissue regeneration, the drug has the function similar to that of Resina Olibani but stronger. It is used to treat pain in the chest and abdomen caused by stasis in the blood division, traumatic ecchymoses, swelling and pain caused by furuncles and carbuncles, arthralgia due to wind-dampness, and other syndromes. Myrrha and Resina olibani are frequently used together for their mutual reinforcement, or synergism.

Effects: Promoting blood circulation to relieve pain, subduing swelling and promoting tissue regeneration.

Indications:

1. For treatment of stabbing pain in stomach and epigastrium due to stasis in the blood division and various pain in heart and abdomen, it is usually used in combination with Resina Olibani, Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae, and other herbs with the effect of promoting blood circulation to relieve pain; For treatment of mass in the abdomen of women, it is frequently used together with Semen Persicae, Radix Paeoniae Rubra, Cortex Moutain Radicis, Rhizoma Sparganii, Rhizoma Zedoariae, and other herbs with the effects of relieving blood stasis and resolving mass in the abdomen.

2. For treatment of furuncles and carbuncle in the early stage, it is always used in combination with Resina Olibani, Flos Lonicerae, Squama Manitis, Radix Angelicae Sinensis, and other drugs having the effects of relieving blood stasis and subsiding swelling; For treatment of pain due to traumatic ecchymoses, it is usually used together with Resina Olibani, Muschus, Flos Carthami, and other herbs with the effect of relieving blood stasis and pain.

Besides, it is applicable for treatment of numbness and pain due to wind-dampness, scrofula, subcutaneous nodule, and so on.

Dosage and Administration: 3-10g, when applied externally, it is used with suitable amount.

Precautions: Contraindicated in pregnancy.
