Sargentgloryvine(hong teng)

Caulis Sargentodoxae

Properties: Bitter in flavour, mild in nature, it acts on the stomach and large intestine channels. The property is mild but a little cool can clear away heat and the bitter flavour resolves boils. So, it has the functions of clearing away heat, detoxicating, dissolving lumps and boils, hence is indicated for acute appendicitis with abdominal pain caused by the accumulation of noxious heat in the large intestine. In addition, the herb is able to enter and act in the blood division and promote blood circulation by resolving stasis. It ca be also used for blood stasis and syndrome of pains.

Effects: Clearing away heat, detoxicating, promoting blood circulation and resolving blood stasis.

Indications:

1. For acute appendicitis and abdominal pain, it is often used in combination with the drugs for removing heat from the intestine, detoxicating, draining pus and resolving boils, such as honeysuckle flower, forsythia fruit, rhubarb and peont bark, known as Hongteng Jian (Decoction of Sargentgloryvine). In cases of suppurative infections on body surface due to noxious heat, it is used with heat-clearing and detoxicating herbs, such as dandelion herb and forsythia fruit.

2. For ecchymoma and traumatic pain, it is used in combination with the drugs for removing blood stasis and relieving pain, as frankincense, myrrha and Chinese angelica root. In cases of stasis in blood division, dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, chuanxiong rhizome, Chinese angelica root and motherwort are used to promote blood circulation, remove blood stasis, regulate menstruation and relieve pain.

Dosage and Administration: 15-30g.
